ANNOUNCEMENT

Mr. Sweet Huat Ling Memorial Scholarship

For the academic year 2008, the JCCAA will provide a "need based" scholarships with an endowment from Mr. William Ling in memorial of his father, Mr. Sweet Huat Ling. This scholarship, in the amount of $3,000 is to be awarded to one Houston area high school senior student. The JCCAA will process the application, selection, and award of the scholarship. Senior students who are currently enrolled in the Greater Houston Area high schools, plan to pursue college education, and can demonstrate financial needs are eligible to apply.

Qualified applicants should submit complete documentation postmarked no later than March 15, 2008 to:

Qualifications:

  1. College-bound senior students currently enrolled in the Greater Houston Area high schools;

  2. High school GPA of at least 3.0 on a 6.0 scale;

  3. SAT score of at lest 1500, or ACT score of at least 25; and

  4. Can demonstrate financial needs.


Required Documents:

  1. A completed Application Form, available at http://www.jccaa.net.

  2. A copy of high school transcript with GPA converted to a 6.0 scale.

  3. A copy of SAT or ACT test results.

  4. An essay in English of 500 words or less that includes a brief biography, family description, reasons for financial needs, thoughts on the applicant's future plans and goals, and any topic that the applicant feels would be of consideration to the selection committee. The essay must be typed, double-spaced, and on letter size paper.

  5. Two letters of recommendation directly mailed to the JCCAA Scholarship Committee, one of which must be from a high school teacher or counselor. The letter should indicate class ranking and percentile.

  6. A copy of Student Aid Report (SAR) from FAFSA* (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) of Federal Student Aid Program;


Certain qualified candidate(s) will be notified for interview to verify the financial needs.


All applications will be evaluated based on financial needs, academic achievement, leadership, community service, and extracurricular activities.


Scholarship recipients will be notified by JCCAA by the end of May, 2008. The Scholarship Award Ceremony will be held at the JCCAA annual banquet on June 28, 2008.
